Unloading my groceries from my car a few weeks ago, looking out at the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan, I was struck by the realization that I dreaded carrying my purchases all the way to the house. It just seemed to be so much work. But then I reminded myself of the blessings of living in Sheboygan County - the beaches, the wonderful people and the myriad of experiences available. That thought was quickly tempered by the realization that if I didn't own a car, I would be living in a near-desert - a food desert, that is.

Before taking this position with United Way of Sheboygan County, I was employed at Lakeland College as an Alumni and Community Engagement Officer. Last summer, while I held that position, I wanted my employer to take advantage of one of the biggest volunteer opportunities in this community: the Volunteer Center of Sheboygan County’s annual Day of Caring.

Volunteer Center

The Volunteer Center of Sheboygan County opened in 2009 as a collaborative initiative between Partners for Community Development (Partners) and the United Way of Sheboygan County, utilizing several key community volunteers and AmeriCorps volunteers. A group of interested local volunteer coordinators, businesses and organizations requested the creation of an organization to assist in recruiting, training and coordinating volunteer programs. Many other individuals and organizations, including schools, churches, non-profits and businesses, have been supportive of the Volunteer Center by serving on the Steering Committee or by partnering with the center.
